Human Microbiome Project
The Human Microbiome Project (HMP) was established with the mission of generating resources enabling comprehensive characterization of the human microbiota and analysis of their role in human health and disease.
About the HMP
The HMP characterized microbial communities found at multiple human body sites and generated a reference collection of microbial genome sequences. The program studied healthy adults and produced standardized sampling, sequencing, quality-control, and analysis resources for the research community.

The first phase of the HMP established a healthy human microbiome reference. The Integrative Human Microbiome Project (iHMP) followed with longitudinal, multi-omic studies of microbiome-associated conditions, including pregnancy and preterm birth, inflammatory bowel disease, and type 2 diabetes.
